If there is one thing about SEO, that is that backlinks do have an important part to play in your strategy. The idea of backlinks is that search engines can see that your content, be it blogs or ecommerce product page have something worth sharing. It is really as simple as that.

Getting good quality backlinks however is, well, a bit harder than other SEO tasks. There are many ways that you can get backlinks. They include from blogs, directories or through ecommerce pages for example. The things with backlinks is they can also take time to build, there is lots of reaching out, getting to work with other websites and steering clear or poor quality ones.

Look at your competitors

There is however a straightforward way. If you look at this from a different angle, how do you know which backlinks to get? What backlinks would work best? The answer is finding out what backlinks your competitors have.

If you research your competitors (which you should already be doing) one thing to add to the list, is their backlinks. Now if competitor A is at the top of google for your keyword, you need to ask yourself why, I have covered this before in other blogs. There could be all kinds of reasons why but something like backlinks, is where you are able to get an upperhand.

Using a simple tool such as backlinks checker from Ahrefs is a free tool. This allows you to type in the competitor url and see what websites link back to them. Now you won’t see them all, but you will get a pretty good idea of which ones get the most traffic.

With this information, you can now register in the same places. This kind of technique is always helpful especially if you want to edge yourself gradually. This can take time to come through, so be patient.
